Jul 19, 2021

If there’s one thing that all homeowners have, AllHome Philippines bets that it’s something made of stainless steel. Objects made of stainless steel are sought after due to their capability to withstand both high and low temperatures, their resistance to rust and water stains, and their ability to endure great weight. They are also aesthetically pleasing as they can fit perfectly into any house theme from classic to modern. When you want to dispose of them, worry not about their negative impact on the environment because they are recyclable. In fact, a lot of stainless steel objects were produced from old ones that were remelted to serve another purpose. However, you would not have to think about disposing of it for a fairly long time because other than its strength and durability, it is also very easy to clean and maintain. It does not enable bacterial growth which is why you can find it to be the top choice of material to get for places that need to follow strict hygienic conditions like in restaurant kitchens and in hospitals. Even so, it being a low-maintenance material does not excuse it from being cleaned. It can still get dirty and have scratches which may then negatively affect its beauty.

That being said, in this article, AllHome Philippines brings to you different ways on how to clean stainless steel with materials that you can find in your homes or different AllHome branches.

Most stainless steel objects we have at home can be found in the kitchen. This includes a stainless kitchen sink, stainless faucet, stainless kitchen appliances, kitchenware like stainless pots and stainless pans, and stainless utensils such as spoons and forks. Given that these things are used for food preparations, AllHome Philippines expects them to have scratches because of regular use and to have water stains because of the high mineral content in the water which we use to wash different objects.

For all of the cleaning and polishing that you will be doing with us in this article brought to you by AllHome Philippines, you will first need to observe where the grains on your stainless steel are oriented to. This is important because you will need to follow the direction of your stainless steel grains as you wipe or scrub to prevent further scratches. After noting the orientation, make sure that the surface of your stainless steel is thoroughly cleaned of any other dirt build-ups.

Cleaning dirt build-ups

To remove dirt build-ups, you can use DIY stainless steel cleaners cleaning using materials that you surely have already in your homes or you can get from AllHome Philippines. The first DIY cleaner you can make is with distilled white vinegar and olive oil. Get one cloth and dampen it with vinegar. Rub it on the part of the dirt you want to remove and let it dry. With another cloth, dampen it with the olive oil and rub it again on the same area.

If you don’t have vinegar and olive oil, you can use dish soap, baby oil, and warm water. In every four tablespoons of warm water, dilute one teaspoon of the dish soap. Dampen one cloth with it, and wipe away the dirt. Let it dry, then dampen another cloth with the baby oil and wipe it on the stainless steel again. AllHome Philippines found that the use of vinegar or dishwashing liquid will break down the dirt, while the olive oil and baby oil will help bring back the luster of your stainless steel.

Cleaning water stains

As mentioned earlier, water leaving stains on your stainless steel is inevitable due to the high mineral content of water. To clean these off, AllHome Philippines recommends that you use white distilled vinegar, lemon juice, or baking soda. Both vinegar and lemon juice are acidic which is the opposite of the alkaline mineral deposits that make up your water stain, thus their interaction will result in the removal of the water stains. Pour your vinegar or lemon juice in a spray bottle and spray it all over your stainless steel, your sink for example, and let it be for five minutes to allow the mixing of the vinegar or lemon juice with the alkaline mineral deposits.

For baking soda, sprinkle a tiny bit of it on the sink, then use a microfiber cloth or sponge to remove the spots. Repeat the process until you achieve your desired result.

Removing scratches

Now that your sink is all cleaned up, let’s talk about the, also inevitable, scratches that result from regular use of your stainless steel. Although there are no health consequences of having scratches on your stainless steel because no bacteria may grow from it, AllHome Philippines understands that it can ruin the aesthetic of stainless steel. With that said, let’s learn how to remove scratches on your stainless steel, first get a sponge or cloth. Second, you can get yourself a non-abrasive cleanser that helps remove scratches or you can also try using toothpaste. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to brush over the scratch with the toothpaste. Remember to do so in the direction of the grains.

If that doesn’t work, you can move on to a more aggressive method as the scratch may be deep. Do this by sanding out the area where the scratch is with sandpaper. First, damp the sandpaper and the area of the scratch with water. Lightly sand the scratch in the same direction as the grains of your stainless steel.

When the scratches are gone, AllHome Philippines suggest that you dry the area with a towel or cloth. Finish the task by applying stainless steel polish, olive oil, or baby oil to bring back the stainless steel’s luster.

Regularly cleaning and maintaining your stainless steel items helps preserve their beauty and prevent permanent damage. Using natural ingredients for cleaning is safe and effective, but if you’re someone who’d rather use chemicals, then solutions for cleaning and polishing stainless steels are readily available in different home depot branches.
