Table Setting Basic Tips & Tricks | AllHome.com.ph

Jul 19, 2021

Sometimes, people just want a semblance of normality they once experienced pre-COVID-19 days. Back when people can dine in or al fresco without any worry of exposing themselves to the pandemic. Fortunately, you can recreate these kinds of scenarios at home so long as you have the utensils and dishes to boot. Here’s AllHome’s tips and tricks on how to set a table for a dinner party so you can do fine dining with style.

What goes on the table

When setting up tables, the first thing you need to think about are what would the table look like and what would be put onto the table. Typically, in fancy dinners, you need to put your best foot forward and use your most beautiful dishes and cutlery. To add an extra aesthetic appeal, make sure that the plates and utensils you use look great with the linens and fabrics applied on your table.

The table itself is a flexible canvas for you to paint your sophisticated dinner setting on. Some restaurants serve food on plain tables. On the other hand, if you want to fancy it up, you’ve got to add tablecloths and other linen & fabrics, such as placemats and stylized napkins, to add some pizzazz to your table setting.

Easy Table Settings

There’s no best way to set your table. There are many variations to table settings depending on how formal, casual, regional, or how big you want the dining setting to be. For an easier approach, we’re tackling basic, formal, and informal, which can be good for intimate, DIY dinner date nights.

Basic

Place the plate on the center of the placemat. The glass should be placed northeast of the plate, far enough to not be hit by the hands while eating while near enough to be easily accessible when parched. Afterwards, there’s two ways of doing the basic table setting. Firstly, all utensils are put onto the napkin—which is placed on the left side of the plate—with the fork on the left-most, the knife (blade facing the fork) in the middle, and the spoon on the right. The other way is to let only the fork remain on the napkin, and put the knife (blade still facing the fork) and the spoon on the opposite side of the plate.

Informal

When you want to feel slightly classy, informal is the way to go. With the addition of a butter plate, butter knife, and dessert utensils, you can pull this off similar to the basic setup with extra steps added. First, you have the prerogative to put your fork on the napkin or beside the napkin. The butter knife (with the blade facing south) should be put on the butter plate, which is placed on the upper left of the plate, parallel to the glass. On the space between the glass and the butter plate, just above the main plate, put the dessert utensils horizontally, facing away from each other.

Formal

Here’s where you go fancy. Used often in restaurants, formal table setting uses the full breadth of cutlery and plates for a delightful four-course meal. Formal setting often has multiple variations, depending on what dishes will be served at the table. Unused utensils and plates may be removed accordingly depending on usage. It can also be overwhelming or daunting to look at, but it’s the fanciest of table settings, letting you try a high-class restaurant experience in your home.
