Beat the heat this summer!

In a country like the Philippines, other than harsh rains, it is in the norm that we experience extreme heat and humidity most particularly during the summer season—especially when you live in the city where trees that invite cool, fresh air are scarce. Hot days leave us sweaty and uncomfortable, so we tend to turn on full blast all our air-conditioning units and electric fans—but in doing so, this shoots up our electricity bill! In order to save electricity but still beating the heat, here are some tips that can surely help you cool down your home.

  1. Use Light Colors for your Exterior

When using colors to reduce the temperature inside your home, you want to avoid dark colors which tend to absorb more of the sun’s energy thus resulting into a warmer home. Stick to light colors like beige, white, or if you want color, go with cool tones like blues and greens; these sets of colors reflect the heat from the sun which can help cool off your home.

  1. Calming Hues for your Interior

Dark and dull colors have a tendency to absorb all that heat. Repaint your walls or add accessories with cool colors that can remind you of water and sky, or even fresh green grass outside. The colors from this palette also have the ability to calm and soothe.

  1. Opt for an Open Floor Plan

Open floor plans are building designs that use minimal barriers/walls to separate various areas of the home. For instance, an open floor plan may feature a unified kitchen, dining, and living room space rather than three separate rooms. Walls obstruct air from flowing around the home; and in a closed-off floor plan, that means each room must be heated and cooled individually. An open floor plan lets air flow more freely.

  1. Install Window and Door Screens

Let more air in by opening your windows and your front door (or even your backdoor if you have one). But having them open may have a downside: bugs and dust will have a clear pathway to enter your home. in order to avoid this, install window and door screens. The screens will keep the bugs and dust from entering.

  1. Replace Your Lights

If your home still makes use of incandescent light bulbs, it’s highly suggested that you swap them with fluorescent bulbs or better yet LED bulbs. Incandescent light bulbs generate a lot of heat so getting rid of them will greatly contribute to lowering your home temperature.

  1. Add Indoor Plants

A natural way to enhance the quality of air and keeping our homes cooler in the summer is to go for indoor plants such as aloe vera, snake plants, or lilies. Having plants inside our homes keep it cooler by consuming hot air for their natural processes. Plants release moisture into the air through the process of transpiration, which cools the air around the plants, leaving it purified and fresh.
