The Philippines is not a stranger to the typhoons and to the destruction it causes. The terror of Typhoon Ulysses, Typhoon Yolanda, and Typhoon Ondoy still remains in the memory of most Filipinos. In a year, around 20 typhoons pass by the country, and several of them are intense–this is explained by the country’s location being along the typhoon belt of the Pacific Ocean, simply put, we are living on islands that are frequented by storms. Thankfully, the weather forecast allows us to gauge how strong an incoming storm is based on its wind power and amount of rain. With that, we can adequately prepare for the undesirable effects of the typhoon.
In this article, nothing more matters to your AllHome family other than your safety, thus we will share with you ways to prepare for typhoons and for different situations that we can experience during the rainy season.
In case of an incoming storm, all of us must do our groceries before it hits to make sure that we have enough supply to last us the whole duration of the storm and even a few days after its expected departure in case we still can’t go out by then due to flood, landslide, or damaged infrastructures. The best things to get are canned goods in case cooking becomes out of the question, and drinking water. If you have pets, make sure to have enough pet food too. All of these can be found in an AllDay supermarket near you. Once you obtain your food and water, you should place them in their respective storage, or in a container like this Home Gallery storage box where the water can’t get into when your house gets flooded.
Aside from food and water, you must also store important documents and money in locked storage like a safe, or if you live in an area that frequently evacuates during a natural disaster, make sure to keep your important documents and some cash safe in a sealed plastic like a ziplock or any plastic that you can seal with a tape, just make sure that there will be no holes left for water to get in.
Before the storm hits is also the best time to prepare your emergency kit. This includes a waterproof flashlight for light source in case your surroundings get dark, a whistle to signal for help in case you’re stranded, a powerbank to charge your gadgets–it’s best if it’s a solar bank
since this can be charged using sunlight making it perfect in times of disaster, medicine, and a transistor radio so you can listen to news reports that will help you stay aware of what is happening around you even when televisions are not available, water and food that won’t expire soon like the canned goods mentioned previously, and a can opener.
In the course of the storm, two possible things to happen are brownout and cut-off water supply. For the brownouts, it will be great if you have a rechargeable lamp for light source that will help you get comfortable moving around your house and also it’s an alternative to candles, thus helping prevent fire, a rechargeable electric fan to keep you cool in case it gets warm even with the storm, powerbanks again to power-up your cell phones or tablets that help keep you entertained, and a mobile load or data to keep your loved ones updated with what’s happening with you, and yourself with the important news.
Another scenario that can happen during a storm is a cut-off in water supply, which is why when announced by your water supplier, you must store water for washing dishes and cleaning yourself in a drum or a bestank water tank. Storing water is a must especially when face-to-face classes are ongoing because even with the cold weather, some people prefer taking bath before going to school or work or even just to freshen up.
Patch the little damage up using construction materials such as a sealant that will help block the passage of fluid through surfaces. Sometimes, the water travels through our walls removing the paint. This is dangerous especially for a household with children because it can result in lead poisoning, which is why it’s important to fix that right away by removing the chipped-off part, and if you want to do it yourself, you can do so with a paintbrush and wall paint.
Finally, don’t go out right away after the storm passes. If going out is really necessary, stay away from damaged infrastructures like buildings and powerlines, and from heavily affected areas.
We have finished talking about what to do before, during, and after a storm. The second and final part of this article is what we’re supposed to do during the whole rainy season. Around this time, diseases get transmitted to people easily. Mosquitoes are prevalent causing dengue, while floods occur a lot causing leptospirosis to people who walk through it. These diseases are two of the most common problems that our healthcare system faces, but they are also a problem to regular citizens because getting sick will debilitate you making you unable to work, and getting treated for it will cost you time and money.
This can be prevented by doing some things. For the prevention of dengue, make sure to cover any water that you’re storing to keep mosquitoes from breeding. Invest in insecticides or mosquito swatter to kill mosquitoes in your home, and in mosquito coils or mosquito patches to keep them away from ourselves. You can also apply insect repellent lotion as an alternative for mosquito patches.
To prevent leptospirosis, make sure that you don’t have an open wound where the virus can enter, and avoid walking through flood. If going through a flood can’t be avoided, you can use boots to protect yourself.
There is nothing more valuable on this planet than all of your existence. We hope this article helps you in your preparation to stay safe and healthy as we enter the rainy season.
