How To Properly Clean Your Fabric Sofa

The furniture that we sit, nap, drink, and snack on as we watch our favorite films in the living room—the sofa. For sure, just like the rest of us in AllHome, you also use your sofa every day. Eventually, our daily usage of it will be evident from crumbs, dust, hair, coffee spills, and other stuff similar to this will accumulate in our sofa. In this time where hygiene is clearly very important, you may want to get to cleaning your sofa.

Cleaning the sofa may be difficult for others since it’s not as easy as just washing, wiping, and letting it dry. Sofas require more than that, which is why we will present to you a step-by-step guide on cleaning fabric sofas in this article.

First, read the label on your sofa before doing anything to it. Check what textile you’re dealing with because different materials have specific instructions for cleaning. There are also letter codes that sofa manufacturers included for you to know how to care for your sofa. The codes and their meaning are as follow:

W – safe to use water and water-based solutions while cleaning.

S – use solvents to clean the upholstery (dry clean).

S/W – solvents or water-based cleaners. For this, either dry cleaning using a mild solution and steam cleaning is a good option.

X – vacuum only, don’t use water.

Second, get your baking soda. Make sure to test it on the unnoticeable areas first to avoid unwanted results. Initially coat the surface of the couch with a small amount of baking soda. Let it sit for around 30 minutes then vacuum it away using the brush attachment. The result will be a gently deodorized couch. In case you want to do deep cleaning, you may mix the baking soda with a dry upholstery cleaner or a carpet cleaner then repeat the process mentioned.

Third, no matter how much effort you put into cleaning, there may be stubborn stains left. Fabric sofas are prone to stain, so cleaning quickly is important. The longer you let the stain sit, the harder it is to remove them. To spot clean, first get a bowl, half-filled with warm water. Mix in 3 tablespoons of white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of dish soap. Dampen a clean cloth or sponge in it, then gently dab your cloth or sponge on the specific area. Try not to be rough as you do this as you may rub the stain into the fabric instead of removing it. Wipe the area with a clean cloth and check if the stain is gone. If it’s still there, repeat the process and let the wet spot dry. Using blow dryers or heaters is not advisable as they can damage your sofa more.

If you want to clean large surfaces, you will need water, vinegar, and dish soap. Mix a cup of warm water, half a cup of white vinegar, and one tablespoon of dish soap in a spray bottle. Close it and shake it well then spray the solution on the surface of the couch from a 30-centimeter distance. Wipe it with a clean cloth to make sure that no excess residue will remain. Have it air-dried, and when it is dried, the smell of the vinegar will be gone, giving you a clean and freshened-up couch.

Other than the method mentioned earlier, you can also use baking powder to make a paste. Mix baking powder and water to make a paste that will remove stubborn and greasy stains. If there’s a stain, put a little paste on it and rub it in a circular motion using the tip of your finger or gently rub it in with a clean cloth. Remember not to scrub, as it pushes the dirt deeper into the textile. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then check if the powder has absorbed the grease. If it has, use a brush to remove the paste or vacuum it using a bristle brush attachment.

If you do not use homemade cleaning products, you can get an upholstery or carpet cleaning product from the store. Just remember to check if it’s appropriate for the material of your sofa. If you have one, do spot-treating first on a hidden area. Check if there will be discoloration or other problems. If there’ none, continue with the cleaning by following the instructions on the label. When drying your sofa, absorb up any residual moisture using a towel, then let the piece air-dry.
