Choosing the perfect sofa for your home is hard enough. You have to carefully choose the one that perfectly fits your aesthetic, the whole flow of the design of your living room, and of course if it fits your budget. With so many types of sofa available, you must find the one that best fits you and your lifestyle. Whether you’re living on your own, with kids running around the house, or with home-trained pets, you have to carefully consider all of these factors to make a worthy and long-lasting investment in your home.

If you have pets, opt for a sofa that is easy to spot clean, and maintain. Sofa linens or loose covers (and pillowcases for your throw pillows) are worth investing in as they can be removed easily for cleaning.

Choose Sofas With Fabrics Made From Synthetic Fibers

Sofas with Fabrics made from synthetic fibers are utilized primarily for their durability and ease of cleaning as opposed to sofas with fabrics made with natural fibers. Synthetic fibers are industrially manufactured and offer superior wear and stain resistance as compared to most natural fabrics.

Look For The Right Kind Of Leather.

Leather is one of the most durable materials, so it’s a great choice for households with kids and pets. Leather sofas are durable and can last for years if taken care of properly. However, not all leather is created equal. Look for semi-aniline or pigmented leather, which has been treated to make it the most durable (and least expensive). This is also the kind of leather that is least sensitive to scuffs. Also keep an eye out for “top-grain” leather, which is considered more durable than split leather.

Leather might be one of the fabrics that aren’t scratch-resistant, but it is very easy to clean and it is hypoallergenic. People who are allergic to dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens that usually accumulate on any fabrics can be easily wiped away from any leather. Leather sofas only require light dusting and maintenance cleaning a couple of times a year whereas a fabric sofa needs to be vacuumed or deep-cleaned regularly.

Take a Chance on Tight-Woven Fabrics

Stay away from loosely woven fabrics. You’ll want to look for fabric that has a tight weave. Think canvas, denim, microfiber, or a tight-weave twill. In general, you want a fabric that’s tightly woven as they are the easiest to clean and most practical to get. Dirt, hair, and other small debris will roll right off of it and can be easily swept off.

If your sofa is upholstered in loose weave fabrics, the tendency is for the threads to unravel when they get caught in claws or teeth. With tightly woven fabrics, little paws won’t get stuck in the fabric, creating pulls and snags. A loose weave also means that small debris, dirt, and hair can get trapped, and you’d eventually end up with a couch that has a really bad smell.

Microfiber Sofas

Avoid delicate fabrics such as silk, velvet, chenille, and suede. They attract pet dander and other fur-like magnets and are very expensive to have professionally cleaned. Instead, opt for classic microfiber. You can’t go wrong with microfiber or canvas. These materials are made to withstand all sorts of use and are typically easy to clean and take care of.
