Must Have Tools for Plumbing Issues

Have you encountered clogged drains and toilets, leaky faucets and pipes in your homes? It is a hassle  when your stool won’t get flushed or your sink is full of water because the draining is slow, these two things happen thanks to clogs. How about leaky faucets and pipes? Not only are they displeasing to look at, but they also cause higher water bills because the water is endlessly flowing. These plumbing issues are common in one’s household, thus it is essential for homeowners to know how to solve minor plumbing problems.

We never know when our pipes become leaky or our drains become clogged, we’re lucky when it happens midday and when we’re available to call for experienced plumbers and monitor their work. However, AllHome knows that that is seldom the case since we live busy lives. Most of the time we can’t afford to spend our time waiting for someone else to do something for us–this is why it is good if we can do some things on our own. With that said, despite not knowing a lot about different plumbing problems, you can still fix common ones. To do so, you’ll have to be equipped with our must-have plumbing tools.

  1. Plunger

A plunger is your best bud in removing blockages. It is made up of a rubber suction cup attached to a wooden or plastic shaft. Plungers are available in different sizes and styles. There is one made specifically for sinks, and a different one for toilets. Make sure that you know which one you need before purchasing.

  1. Pipe wrench

Pipe wrench or monkey wrench is a tool used to assemble or disassemble pipes or any circular bars. Its jaws are serrated and pivoted on the handle to ensure that it has a strong grip on the object you’re going to hold or adjust. It is adjustable and it comes in various shapes and sizes–making it a good tool for to tighten, loosen, or hold objects of different sizes into place.

  1. Pliers

Pliers are hand operated tools that are used to hold and grip small objects or bend and cut wires. There are different types of pliers. There’s a slip-joint plier whose jaws are grooved and the pivot hole is elongated so that it can hold objects, and a long-nose plier that is capable of cutting thin wires or bending them. Having pliers as part of your tools is important because it has many uses, but for this article, pliers are beneficial in gripping round objects like pipes. Every homeowner needs a plier for their plumbing repair work.

  1. Drain snake

Drain snake is not a very common tool to have at home, however, its easability to operate and its capability of solving even major clogging problems make it an essential tool to have. It works by having what is called the “snake” get into contact with the clogged material by manually inserting it to the drain. When it reaches the clogged material, you can rotate the handle to uncoil the snake. As it uncoils, it also moves deeper into the drain until it penetrates the clog and eventually breaks it. They are perfect for tough clogs that can’t be solved by your plungers as they can go through hard to reach areas.

  1. Teflon tape

Teflon tape is helpful for issues with leaking pipes. You can wrap it around the connection between two pipes where the leak is occurring and you’ll have an effectively sealed and leak-free surface. More than that, it also lubricates the connection between the two pipes thus making the threading smooth and easy to disassemble in the future. A similar tool that can be found in AllHome is this waterproofing tape by Dr. SEAL.

     6. Sealants

Other than the previously mentioned teflon tape, another useful tool in sealing leaky pipes or even surfaces is a tool called sealant. The sealant that you will use will depend on your purpose. For pvc pipes, a sealant carried by the Sureseal brand provides an affordable choice that gives excellent adhesion strength. Another type of sealant is a silicone sealant that is both high and low temperature resistant. It is also water-resistant. It has outstanding weatherability making it a good choice for sealing even leaky pipes.
