Boiling, frying, and steaming: these are the purpose that our kitchenware serve for and they fulfill these under extreme heat, thus it is only right that we invest in kitchenwares that are durable and will last for a long time. Of course, great quality often comes with a huge price, and with the huge price we’ll be spending for these kitchenwares, we want them to last for many years. But how do we know when we need to replace our kitchenware already? When is the time when we can say that it’s been long enough for the amount we spent?
In this article, AllHome will be sharing with you the signs that you may need to look out for to know when is the best time to replace your kitchenware!
In general, you have to look at the exterior of your kitchenware. How is its base? The heat being endured by our kitchenware can cause its exterior to warp out of its original shape. Check if your pot or pan is already distorted by placing it on a flat surface. If it rocks, it is likely that its base has changed its shape, which will interrupt your cooking as the areas of the base affected no longer have full and equal contact with the heat source causing some parts of your food to burn or some parts to be still uncooked.
Next, check the handles of your pot or pan if there are weak or loose screws. Having weak or loose screws can allow liquid to come out of your kitchenware while cooking.
For non-stick kitchenware, the signs that it may need replacement are dark discoloration and significant scratches. Discolorations are not all bad, in fact, this is common since food build-up causes it over a long time of use. However, once these discolorations darken, it may be an indication that the non-stick coating of your kitchenware has been damaged, thus needing replacement. For scratches, a few minor ones are, of course, expected. You can’t really avoid it, no matter how much you try to take care of your kitchenware. Significant scratches are when your non-stick kitchenware is extremely scratched that the nonstick coating starts to chip off. This is a hazard to your health too as the chipped-off coating can stick to your food when you continue using your kitchenware, so to be safe, it’s best to replace your kitchenware.
With the combination of exteriors made from stainless steel and cores composed of aluminum or copper, stainless steel is one of the most durable kitchenware. The only sign to watch out for with stainless steel kitchenware is when the core material, which is either copper or aluminum, is starting to show off through the stainless.
For cast iron kitchenware, your number one enemy is the rust that builds up on it. If your regular cleaning using vinegar, steel wool, and dish soap could no longer remove the rust on your cast iron kitchenware, then it’s best to replace them since you may ingest the rust if you continue using it.
Moreover, as you deliberately clean your cast iron to remove stuck particles, the kitchenware may chip off, which if repeated for a long time, can damage your pan. Chipping off iron from damaged cast iron kitchenware can mix with your food and is dangerous to your health, so if you notice that kitchenware is chipping off, it’s time to replace it.
Another possible result of deliberate cleaning of cast iron is cracks and holes. Cracks can be a site of bacterial growth on your cast iron which can make you sick, and both cracks and holes can also lead to chips of iron in your food, as mentioned previously. So, once you see cracks and holes on your cast iron kitchenware, it’s time to say goodbye to them.
Chipping off of materials occurs in almost all materials used for producing kitchenware, and enamel cast kitchenware is not exempted. Over long use, the enamel of your kitchenware will start to flake especially at the bottom when you stir or scrape. Once it starts, it will continue to chip off and they will get into your food, which is why it’s best to replace your enamel cast kitchenware by this time.
Now that you’ve learned the signs to look out for to know when the best time to replace your cookware is, it’s time to head to your kitchen and do quality control on your kitchenware.
