Common Problems With Split Type AC and How To Fix Them

Are you one of those people who have jumped in the split-type AC hype or are you just looking into buying one? If you are any of these two, this article is for you. It just seems fair to know more about the products you have or planning to have from the “why to get it” to “how to fix it” in case it gets in any trouble.

Since the Philippines is a tropical country wherein summers can get really hot and humid, investing in the best air conditioning unit is a must. To say that an AC unit is the best option means that it should be cost-effective and is capable of cooling a room quickly. These standards have made split-type air conditioners very popular nowadays. A split type AC is the smartest choice especially if you need an air conditioning unit in your house, condo, and etc. This is because of the following advantages:

  • More capable of cooling large spaces without occupying so much space in a room
  • It is cost-effective
  • It is more silent than usual air conditioning units so you can always have that perfect beauty rest
  • It looks more elegant and pleasing
  • It does not take up any additional floor space
  • More environment friendly
  • They are easy to install

Although, even with these advantages, you can still encounter some problems with these kinds of air conditioning units just like any appliance at home. Worry not because these common problems can be easily fixed by you and AllHome is here to help you from identifying the problem to solving it. Here are some common problems with split types and how you can fix them:

  • AC does not turn on

What you should do: For anything that does not seem to turn on, the first step is to check the power supply. Ensure that your AC is well connected to the power supply or that the power supply is working. If it is, check any wirings of the air conditioner to see if it is still intact or if any mice or any animal have bitten them. If all wirings seem to be okay, then the issue could be coming from your power supply or the electrical wiring at home. Check if any fuse has blown and try to restart the power, but if these do not do the trick, the AC might have an issue internally already. In that case, call your trusty technician or service maintenance for troubleshooting.

  • The AC’s fan does not work

What you should do: If the fan of your split type is not working, look for the remote first

make sure that you’ve pressed the button to turn on the fan. If it still does not work, then the circuit breaker inside may be switched off. This prevents the fan from receiving the power while the AC unit is running. Also, try to check if there has been ice accumulating in the coil already. When it has disrupted your split type’s functionality, contact a professional for help.

  • Ice accumulating in the coil

What you should do: A common problem that happens in any air conditioning unit is ice

accumulating in the internal coil. When this happens, other problems occur as well like the AC’s fan not working or the air coming out would be warm. Ice accumulates in the coil when the level of refrigerant is less than the required amount which makes the temperature of the cooling coil drop below normal. Because of this, the moisture in the room condenses resulting in it freezing in the coil. This should be cleansed by a repair professional or service maintenance. The technician will also check and determine if the level of refrigerant is also right.

  • The remote does not seem to work

What you should do: As simple as that sounds, this is actually another common problem we can encounter with our air conditioning units and this could be solved with a simple solution as well. Check your remote’s battery if it is still working. You might need to replace it already. Check the buttons as well and if something is not working, you can try to open the remote to fix the buttons or have them replaced.

  • The air coming out of the AC is warm

What you should do: When your split type is blowing warm air rather than cool, check

the temperature you have set first or maybe the remote is not working that when you adjust the temperature, the AC does not respond. If this is not the case, check your thermostat. It should be at least 5 degrees lower than the temperature of the room. You may also consider checking the settings. Make sure that it is in the setting you want. If nothing has happened, turn off your AC and check if it is clean inside. Carefully clean and ensure that there is enough air supply coming from the coil to the condenser. If the cause of this problem is that ice has accumulated in the coil or there has been a refrigerant leakage, contact your service provider immediately.

  • Your AC is emitting a foul odor

What you should do: Sometimes, when ACs are switched on, they emit a foul or

unbearable smell. This may happen for several reasons, but it mostly lies in the drainage system. Because of the dust and accumulated dirt inside the drain which gets mixed with moisture, the pipe or drainage would start to smell bad. This is very likely especially since moisture and dirt make mold. This can be easily cleaned or if the smell is too unpleasant, have your technician clear it out for you.
