How To Apply Feng Shui Principles In Your Home

People have used feng shui principles for years to improve their living spaces and increase the positive energy in their surroundings. The principles of feng shui are intended to balance and harmonize a person, their possessions, and the space they occupy. If you want to improve the general atmosphere in your own home, you should apply the principles of feng shui. Applying the feng shui to your home will help bring in the good chi energy and make your house a place where you enjoy spending time.

The basics of Feng Shui:

Before anything else, you should familiarize yourself with the common feng shui terms and know what each element symbolizes.

  • Qi or Chi energy – is known to be the breath of the universe, invisible energy that sustains all living and inanimate things. This energy is also present in buildings. Feng Shui focuses on enhancing positive Chi and decreasing negative Chi in buildings and homes.
  • The 5 elements – All things in the universe interact with the five fundamental elements – wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Each element represents a specific color, direction, climate and season, and shape.
    1. Water represents the North direction and is known by the color black and blue. It symbolizes the cold, winter season. Its shape is wavy or undular. It is associated with emotions, abundance, prosperity, movement, cleansing, and purification.
    2. Fire represents the South direction and is known by the red color. It symbolizes the hot, summer season. Its shape is triangular. It stands for passion, action, fame, leadership, and boldness.
    3. Earth represents the center and it is known by the color yellow. It symbolizes the changing of seasons and the shape of a square.  It stands for physical strength, security, and stability in relationships and careers.
    4. Wood represents the East direction and is known for its green color. It symbolizes the season of spring. Its known shape is a rectangle. It typically stands for a new life, spirituality, health, and growth.
    5. Metal represents the West direction and is known by the white color. It symbolizes the autumn season. Its shape is round. It stands for logic and mental clarity. It also aids in love, health and wealth.

Applying the Feng Shui principles at your home

Now that you’ve learned the basics, you should now learn how to plan and amend any negative Chi or bad luck to the areas of your home in order to bring a balance to your living space.

  • Main Entrance

The main entrance or your front door is the area where the positive Chi and wealth enter your home. That’s why it’s important for the main entrance to your home to be the most visible door from the outside. You should also note that any walls or stairs should not be within 6 ft of your front door because according to Feng Shui, it’s bad luck. It denotes undergoing financial losses because the force of Chi that comes down from the stairs is more than the Chi that comes from the front door.

Get rid of clutter by storing your items in URATEX Spot It Drawer 5 Layer Black, adding good lighting like LITESPLUS IA-SLEC23423 2pcs Solar Wall Light, and displaying plants in a Plant Stand 4 Tier-Rack for your front door can help you attract positive Chi in this area. You can also repair or replace old door hinges with SS353525 DOOR HINGE to avoid any annoying squeaky sounds.

If by any chance, your front door is facing your stairs, you can do a remedy by dispersing the Chi from the stairs towards either side of your front door so it won’t oppose the Chi coming in from the main entrance. You can diffuse the energy by placing a small wall mirror at the back of your front door, hanging crystals above the stairs, or adding a wind chime or a money tree between the stairs and the front door.

  •  Living Room

Make your living room the center of your home. In feng shui, this area is a great place to focus your energy and encourage interaction between your loved ones. Also, your living room should have sufficient space. Furniture should not obstruct the flow of positive Chi so avoid overcrowding because empty areas help facilitate movement in the room.

It’s a good idea to bring water elements like a tabletop fountain or a vase made of glass for your home décor to encourage a good flow of Chi. Adding wood and earth elements like KREATIV Logan Coffee Table with a Capiz Vase with Preserved Dried Flowers Via brings stability and growth.

  • Dining Room

Ideally, to bring a good flow of Chi to your dining room, your dining table should be round. Though rectangular or square tables are also acceptable, it is best to not have anyone sitting at the corner of your dining table. Eating with the table’s corner facing one’s stomach is bad luck in feng shui.

To prevent any negative Chi, it’s important to keep the area well-lit and spacious. A wall mirror like  Florence Decorative Wall Mirror 18H1111 reflecting the food on the table doubles your good fortune. Any sharp corner or column should have a potted plant in front of it. The dining table should always have something on it. Place a Glass Fruit Bowl with some fruits like grapes which stand for abundance and success.

  • Kitchen

It is believed that the kitchen contributes to health, happiness, and wealth in feng shui. An unkempt kitchen emits negative energy into the space, which can have an impact on the health of family members.

Prepare your kitchen for feng shui by cleaning appliances, clearing off countertops, and ensuring that every item has a place to be stored. Make sure nothing is broken in your kitchen to promote a good flow of Chi. Replace any dinnerware, cookware or utensils that are chipped or broken with new ones like Corelle 16pc. Dinneware set – Winter Frost White.

As the kitchen is associated with the fire element, it is advisable to avoid using colors like reds and oranges in order to avoid an energy imbalance. Instead, use earth colors like shades of yellow and brown.

  • Bedroom

The bedroom is one’s sanctuary and it’s vital to create a good atmosphere. Beds in a feng shui bedroom should be placed near a corner that is diagonally opposite the bedroom door to provide separation and full view of the door.  Also, ensure your bed is stable and balanced with a stable headboard such as SALEM Nite & Day With Pull Out & Headboard. You should also use side tables like KREATIV Shadi BT-1D Bedside Table on both sides to keep your bed clutter-free.

Keep your bedroom color schemes subtle and neutral for peaceful vibes and avoid any water elements to prevent loss of Chi.

  • Bathroom

You should not overlook the bathroom when applying feng shui to your home. Make your bathroom nourishing and balanced by choosing décor and pieces that strengthen the earth element such as placing granite countertops or ceramic tiles like VENUS Mosaic Vm-Pm 204, placing plants, and adding essential oils like PERFUMISTA REED DIFFUSER SET 85ML.

For overall good feng shui, the toilet seat should always be closed when not in use. Since toilets remove waste and water, it symbolizes the loss of resources. Also, it’s crucial to keep your bathroom door closed when not in use. By doing so, you will minimize the likelihood of good Chi leaving your home.
