Tips on How To Keep Your Desk Clean

Are you having a hard time being productive at work? Are you struggling to get things done? Look around you. Is your office desk a mess?

You see, unorganized desks decrease productivity and efficiency in work environments. Apart from being messy to look at, cluttered work areas are stressful and make it harder to focus. Cleaning the desk might look like a mountain of a job but if you are committed and ready, the job is straightforward and easy.

Here are a few ways how to keep your desk clean and organized so you can enjoy a clearer and more productive start to the year. Today is also the perfect time to do it because January 11 is Clean Off Your Desk Day!

Clear off and Purge

To start off fresh, it’s best to clear off everything and start from scratch. Remove everything from your desk including your drawers and wooden shelves. Clean off the bottom of your desk, remove those empty cans and snack packets too. Put all your stuff in a waste bin and wipe down your desk.

You’ve done the physical aspect of purging, now comes the other part that’s easier. We also need to clean up digitally. Digital clutters are those email windows and open tabs that have been open since you never know when. Reduce those distractions because that not only improves your focus, it also improves your computer’s performance.

Assess and rearrange your belongings

For items that you might need but not immediately, store them on a modular cabinet or side table drawer. Now that your desk is empty, it’s time to put the items back one by one.

Before you do this, you should have 3 categories. You should have “keep”, “store” and “throw”. The “keep” category is for the things you’ll use every day like a few pens, a notebook, and some sticky notes. The “store” category is for those things you don’t really have a need for but you think you will need in the future like reports and other documents. The “junk” category is for the things you will not use like extra pens and your different colored sticky notes.

Next is to arrange them with what you use daily as the nearest to you like pens and sticky notes. Then the ones you don’t really need every day are in the back but still be within arms reach.

It’s best to also do this on files on your computer. Some files have been there for who knows when and you know you’ll never open it again.

Manage cable clutter

This might seem basic to some but your cables need to be organized too. Those cables are dust magnets so getting them sorted out should also be a priority.

First, unplug all the cables then label them before tying them up and putting them back in. This way it’s easier to troubleshoot what the problem is rather than trailing which cable is which. I suggest you get a cable organizer and a gadget accessories organizer to tie those cables up in place so they don’t dangle in front of your feet.

Use your drawers

A lot of office desks have these chests of drawers and cabinets included so why not take full advantage of these and use them as necessary. Those big drawers can store your files and the smaller drawer can store your supplies like staples, extra pens, and other bits and pieces. Use some organizers in there too to avoid it getting cluttered.

Using colored folders with side labels is a smart way to organize your files that you can’t store digitally. Use labels that are easily readable and clear so won’t end up taking it all out of the drawer when finding something. Keep these files neat and organized by returning them to the same spot you got them.

As for your bits and pieces, you might need another smaller organizer for that. A pencil case would be great for your pens and a small container for your staples. Don’t just throw them in your drawer after using them; take time to put it back where you got them. Always keep that in mind to keep your desk clutter-free.

Take time to clean

You cleaned off your table, that’s great! Keeping it that way is another task altogether. After every working day, have at least an extra 5 minutes of your day to throw trash in your bin. Remember to put back all the items you used in their respective places and wipe down unnecessary dust. By tidying it up every day, you minimize the need for a weekly clean-up and monthly purges.

There you have it! Here are easy steps to follow for a much more productive work environment. Keeping your desk clean and clutter-free will pay off big time. Instead of getting frustrated finding and shuffling your items, you now have more time to focus on more important tasks. Happy cleaning!
