Dos and Don’ts of Christmas Decors

Dos and Don’ts of Christmas Decors

One surefire sign that the most beautiful time of the year has arrived is the decorations that cover homes and businesses. Strings of lights hung around the Christmas tree. Ornaments and poinsettia leaves surround the room. Shades of green, red, and white envelop the whole space. While the sight of Christmas fervor may seem pleasant, putting them all together may be a different story, especially for one inexperienced with decorating.

If you, dear readers, are asking yourselves, “Am I doing this right or wrong,” you have come to the right place. In another one of our Christmas-themed entries, we tackle the dos and don’ts of Christmas decorating that will help you turn your home into a North Pole-like paradise!

DO Show variety. DON’T Settle for uniformity.

Each holiday typically has a distinctive color scheme and images that people associate with the season. For instance, when we think of Halloween, the first images that come to mind are orange pumpkins & autumn leaves, dark, haunted homes, and white-veiled ghosts. Christmas is no different, with evergreen trees, red hollies, and white snow.

However, here’s a secret we’d like to share with you: it doesn’t have to be. Decorating your home for the holidays provides a ripe opportunity to home your creativity and look beyond traditional palettes and appearances.

Add orange hues to your living room for zest and vivacity, or evoke Scandinavian festivities with blue and white plating at the dining table. Mimic a North American cottage setting with a classic wood-filled design, or embrace the decadence of modernity with hues of black and white.

Whichever you desire, the creative possibilities are almost endless.

DO find balance. DON’T over-decorate.

With those encouraging words, you are probably heading to your nearest store to grab every piece of decor you can find. Well, hold your horses!

While we do like to cultivate inspiration and artistry, you must also counteract them with a sense of balance and restraint. When your guests get to visit your Christmas-filled home, the aim is to impress, not overwhelm, as the excitement of the holidays is a vibe meant to invite and welcome people.

Likewise, finding harmony also comes with practical reasons. It’s important to remind ourselves that Christmas only comes once a year. Therefore, when your home isn’t overstuffed with decorations, it would be as easy to dismantle them by the end of the season as when you started putting them up.

Here are a few quick tips to avoid overdoing the decorations:

  • Conceptualize a cohesive color scheme pleasing to the eyes.
  • Space out your decorations, and avoid concentrating them in a single area.
  • Choose an overarching theme for your design.

DO decorate with lights. DON’T overload.

Christmas lights add that shining and glimmering character to any decorated home. In some extravagant households, those streams of lights can transform homes into eye-catching tourist attractions as they dance to the rhythm of our favorite Christmas tunes, past and present.

If you envision your home as the brightest one in the neighborhood, it’s best to start planning! There are a handful of factors, such as the number of lights and the overall design, to take into account. Therefore, the first step is to create a sketch of your home’s lighting design with the following:

  • Measurements of the exteriors;
  • Color and length of the lights;
  • Overall wiring;

After you have planned out your fixtures and purchased your lights, it’s time to start hanging! Throughout the process, safety must be an utmost priority, so it is best to have people assist you at all times and avoid performing the task under inclement weather conditions. Use clips to fasten the wiring on roof gutters and shingles. For the vertical sides and corners, apply hot glue to attach the lights in place. Lastly, plug in the lighting through an outdoor GFCI outlet or use extension chords connecting to indoor outlets.

Don’t overload your plug outlets; avoid leaving the light decors on overnight. During the Christmas season, house fires commonly occur due to short-circuiting and overheating from the electrical decorations. Ensure you have switched them off before calling the night and discourage yourself from relying on a single outlet. If possible, you may use a switch with a built-in timer, so you won’t forget to turn them off.
