Finding the Right Light Bulb by Luminux

The idea of using electricity to create light came long before Edison when a chemist from England named Humphrey Davy successfully tested this through electrically charged wires. Years later, Warren de La Rue and Joseph Swan attempted to invent a more practical use for this phenomenon. But, they needed a material that burns for long durations while being cheap enough for widespread use.

Determining the cap type

When you detach that defective light bulb from its socket, you will notice the shape of the screw into which you insert it, and this is the first characteristic you must determine when searching for the proper bulb.

Look at the bottom or base of the light bulb, and check its label for the specifications. The letter determines the type of screw, while the number indicates its diameter in millimeters (mm). In some cases, however, you can find both in their packaging.

The different types of light bulbs

Here are the three most common types sold in stores.

While Compact Fluorescent Lamps or CFL lights have fallen out of favor over the years due to their constant buzzing sounds and vulnerability to flickering, some residents and business owners still prefer this type for its generally lower price and wide availability. It also possesses energy savings qualities for those wanting cheaper electrical bills.

One factor to consider in finding a new light bulb is energy efficiency. Which type can produce the brightest light using the least amount of energy? When shopping for one, you will notice the number of wattage (W) and lumens (L) labeled on the packaging, indicating the amount of electrical energy consumed to produce a bulb’s brightness.

However, brighter doesn’t always mean better, as it will depend on where you will be using and placing the light. A simple bedroom lamp will require a dimmer bulb, whereas a hallway light may need brighter and more widespread lighting.

In all shapes and sizes

To ensure that your light bulb fits into your socket, you should also consider its overall size and shape. Most light bulbs typically come in the pear-shaped GLS/Standard form. They are ideal for general home lighting, used in ceilings and lamps. Others, such as the candle and golfball-shaped types, are generally for decorative purposes and are smaller to fit in tighter spaces.
