Historians have frequently credited Thomas Edison as the inventor of the modern-day light bulb, but the truth is far more nuanced than people might think.

The idea of using electricity to create light came long before Edison when a chemist from England named Humphrey Davy successfully tested this through electrically charged wires. Years later, Warren de La Rue and Joseph Swan attempted to invent a more practical use for this phenomenon. But, they needed a material that burns for long durations while being cheap enough for widespread use.

It was, then, that Edison solved the problem with the filament light bulb.

Since then, it has become quite ubiquitous in our modern world. We have used this simple invention to light up our homes and businesses so much that, in our present times, we have taken it for granted, and we see that when the time comes to replace that flickering bulb.

You may have the following questions in mind. What should I be looking for in a lightbulb? What makes one different or better than the other? Does looking into one of its qualities matter?

Today’s new entry will answer these questions, featuring products from AllHome’s in-house lighting brand Luminux.

Determining the cap type

When you detach that defective light bulb from its socket, you will notice the shape of the screw into which you insert it, and this is the first characteristic you must determine when searching for the proper bulb.

Look at the bottom or base of the light bulb, and check its label for the specifications. The letter determines the type of screw, while the number indicates its diameter in millimeters (mm). In some cases, however, you can find both in their packaging.

Regardless, when you check out our LUMINUX light bulbs, you will likely encounter the screw type, the most common of them all. As the name implies, the base is screw-shaped to twist the bulb into its socket.

The different types of light bulbs

In the years since the invention of the filament light bulb, technological advancements have led to the innovation of brighter, more affordable, and more efficient models. One must be knowledgeable of their respective advantages and disadvantages.

Here are the three most common types sold in stores.

While Compact Fluorescent Lamps or CFL lights have fallen out of favor over the years due to their constant buzzing sounds and vulnerability to flickering, some residents and business owners still prefer this type for its generally lower price and wide availability. It also possesses energy savings qualities for those wanting cheaper electrical bills.

Then, there are the halogen types, like this LUMINUX Filament Bulb, which are advantageous for their dimmable qualities, fast warm-up, and typically lengthy lifetime. However, they often don’t come cheap, produce less light energy, and emit heat.

But, the most popular and preferred type of light bulb would be the Light-emitting diodes or LEDs, such as this LUMINUX model, and not without reason. They are highly energy-efficient, utilizing less energy than other incandescent lighting types, but can emit as much or more light than their counterparts. Although they can be costly, LEDs have longer life spans, making them more affordable in the long term.

Shining bright

One factor to consider in finding a new light bulb is energy efficiency. Which type can produce the brightest light using the least amount of energy? When shopping for one, you will notice the number of wattage (W) and lumens (L) labeled on the packaging, indicating the amount of electrical energy consumed to produce a bulb’s brightness.

To get a clearer picture, here is a chart containing the lumens and wattage of each kind of light bulb.

Lumens      Incandescent (Watts)   Halogen (Watts)   LED (Watts)
100 7 6 2
375 25 20 4
450 30 25 5
800 60 45 9
1100  75 60 12
1600  100 90 17

However, brighter doesn’t always mean better, as it will depend on where you will be using and placing the light. A simple bedroom lamp will require a dimmer bulb, whereas a hallway light may need brighter and more widespread lighting.

In all shapes and sizes

To ensure that your light bulb fits into your socket, you should also consider its overall size and shape. Most light bulbs typically come in the pear-shaped GLS/Standard form. They are ideal for general home lighting, used in ceilings and lamps. Others, such as the candle and golfball-shaped types, are generally for decorative purposes and are smaller to fit in tighter spaces.
