And the best fryer goes to…

Lechon kawali, crispy pata, fried chicken, french fries—these are just a few of the mouthwatering foods that need to undergo deep frying for people to enjoy. Deep frying is the process of submerging foods into hot cooking oil. Restaurants and fast foods offer deep-fried foods because of the consensus that deep-fried foods are one of the most delicious and tender foods to eat. Deep frying came about around the fifth millennium B.C. It was the ancient Egyptians who first invented this cooking method, not knowing how it will change the culinary industry.
However, deep-fried foods don’t exist without consequences for one’s health. The cooking oil that is used to deep fry foods has trans fat, which is difficult to break down, thus causing an individual to be at an increased risk for certain illnesses such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. In an attempt to avoid these consequences, while still enjoying the fried dishes we all love, the airfryer was invented by Fred van der Weij and then introduced to the world in 2010.
An airfryer is an appliance that is capable of deep-frying foods without using cooking oil. However, it does not really fry food. What happens is the food is placed on a perforated basket and the air fryer blows hot air around it to cook it. As long as the air being blown exceeds 160 degrees Celsius, the air fryer can turn even your frozen foods brown just like a deep fryer would.
Since the air fryer is invented for a new way of healthier cooking method, it obviously beats deep frying on the health aspect, but what other differences do the two have from each other? We’ll find out in this article.
Air fryers can definitely give you that crisp and golden exterior that is similar to deep-fried foods, but do they taste the same? Apparently, it does not. When talking about the taste of food, deep-fried is better and a reason for it is the cooking oil whose fats have their own flavor that adds to the taste of the food being cooked. So, if you give high importance to the taste of your foods, deep fryer is for you.
Indeed, both air fryer and deep fryer can produce crispy fried dishes, however, if you want to do other things like baking, roasting, and grilling, then an air fryer is your best bet. Air fryers are multifunctional. You can cook a lot of different varieties from baked goods like brownies to roast chicken.
Deep frying cooks up food quicker than any other form of cooking. This is thanks to the law of thermodynamics, heat transfer from hot liquid, that is your cooking oil, to your solid food is faster compared to the transfer of heat from hot air to solid food. For instance, a food being deep-fried takes around three to five minutes to cook, while food that is being air-fried in an airfryer will take around 10 to 20 to be done. With that, the deep fryer wins this round. However, we may have to consider how long it takes to preheat your cooking oil. If you’re heating a large amount of oil, then the whole process of deep-frying may take longer than air frying.
Of course, cooking doesn’t come without cleaning. With the tedious process of preparing your ingredients and actual cooking, all of us would want the choice that is easier to clean to make the whole process less tiring. Knowing that airfryers have a perforated basket, some of you may assume that that would be hard to clean, but you’re wrong. You will all be delighted to know that most air fryers come with a non-stick basket making them very easy to clean. Also, there are air fryers that are dishwasher safe, so when talking about hassle-free, the air fryer wins. Deep fryers will require more thorough cleaning because of the use of large amounts of cooking oil. Not only will you clean the deep fryer, but you may also need to clean your kitchen counter or your stove, or even the wall surrounding your deep fryer because the oil might have splattered everywhere during the process.
Both airfryer and deep fryer have their own pros and cons and it is up to you which aspect matters most to you. For healthy cooking and versatility that is also easy to clean, the air fryer is the one for you. For speed and taste, a deep fryer is perfect for you.
