Different Types of Modern Television

Different Types of Modern Television

Technology may have evolved over eons, but some of humankind’s most essential inventions are those we still keep yet have taken for granted. Among them is the television, which has served us with audio-visual leisure since its introduction in the late 1920s. Almost a century onwards, advancements and innovations have upscaled the newfound capabilities of 21st-century television.

Suppose you come into your closest appliance store to look for a brand new TV set, you are probably wondering. What kind, brand, or size are you searching for in your home? While the latter two factors do matter, one essential aspect to keep in mind is that no two television types are the same.

Therefore, this blog article will focus on some television types, what differentiates them from each other, and what pros and cons they possess that you have to consider before getting one. Here, we will discuss these types based on the following classifications: the technology utilized, the shape of the screen, and the image resolution they project onscreen.

Technology

Televisions, over time, use certain types of technology contemporary to the period of their invention. As a handful of them no longer exist in our current market, this discourse will only focus on the three most common kinds of television technology currently utilized in 2022: LCD, QLED, and OLED.

Liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs are probably the most commonly sold type. Its high-definition imagery resulted from three layers of glass panels (each containing the colors red, green, and blue) filled with liquid crystal molecules that activate through electric currents. Their screens are highly versatile and can be found in numerous gadgets today, such as smartphones and PC monitors. They are perhaps the most affordable in the market compared to other television types and can come in small or widescreen sizes. Not to mention, they are lightweight in contrast to some television sets. However, there are some drawbacks. For one, older versions of these TVs have a fixed resolution. Therefore, they may not be able to process images and videos with higher resolutions. In addition, most LCD TVs are flat, which limits an audience’s viewing angles.

Quantum Light-Emitting Diode (QLED) televisions are the newer and more improved versions of LCD TVs. It improves upon LCD’s ability to project color and brightness thanks to its use of electrically charged quantum dots. In addition, they have a longer lifespan and better contrast ratios than other types. Despite this, QLED TVs require a larger screen, which buyers that prefer less sizable and less costly television sets may avert. Still, this might entice homeowners who wish to recreate a home theater experience in their entertainment rooms.

Lastly, there are the Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) televisions. They utilize organic compounds compared to LED lights from other kinds. They are thinner and sleeker than the two previously mentioned television types, are more energy-efficient (and subsequently more cost-efficient) than other brands, and can project dark images better than most screens. However, because they utilize organic compounds, they do not have the lifespan and durability that the two previously mentioned TV types possess better.

Shape

Regardless of what type of television technology you prefer, their screens may all come in two general shapes: flat and curved, and, once again, they come with pros and cons.

When purchasing a new TV set, you will most likely attain a flat screen, which has the advantage of arguably being the most ubiquitous shape of modern televisions. Flatscreens also come in various sizes accommodating your home theater or condo unit needs. Conversely, one minor setback to consider is the viewing angles. Depending on your distance and orientation from the screen, the image may appear distorted and inaccurate when, for example, you sit on the left side.

Hence, some homeowners might prefer getting a curved television. Its slight advantage over its flat counterpart is that it covers one’s field of vision better and gives off the illusion of a bigger screen akin to that of a movie theater projection. However, do know that they are rare and difficult to find in the market due to low demand. Even if you do find one, they will always come in massive sizes required for their shape, so this may not be a suitable type for smaller living spaces.

Resolution

One last component to discuss is the image resolution, referring to how many pixels it would take to produce the photographic projection. The more pixels used, the clearer and more refined the image becomes. But, this does not automatically mean that one must purchase a TV that produces a higher resolution. To understand why, let us look at one type of resolution.

In recent years, there has been a gradual increase in demand for 4K television, which, as its name implies, produces over four-thousand pixels. As a result, it can project even less obscure objects with finer details, and viewers can view the screen at a more comfortable distance. In addition, streaming applications such as Netflix have accommodated their shows to such high resolution, making your viewing experience much more enjoyable.

But, not all video formats will look better in 4K, especially those released before this TV resolution’s introduction. Furthermore, most 4K televisions have to accommodate the higher resolution by upsizing the screens, much to the disadvantaged to smaller and simpler living spaces.

Those are such qualities of 21st-century television that you must know before starting your search. Regardless of what you choose, we hope you find the right one for you or your friends and family to enjoy.
