Christmas may already be in the hearts of many Filipinos as the holiday season in this country starts to make itself felt as early as September. But before we go on about our merry preparations there is an exciting holiday that nearly everyone anticipates with as much fervor: Halloween. After all, what’s not to love about the day kids go trick-or-treating in the neighborhood or friends put on their most frightening costumes?
Arguably, nothing shows Halloween spirit more than turning your home into a house of terrors!
Continuing our Halloween-themed entries this month, allow us to share some tips and tricks make your own ghastly decors without the need for big-time spending!
Here’s a trivia that may interest you: the day of October 31 is part of a three-day period of observance known as AllHallowtide. Generally, Christians commemorate these three consecutive days (Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls Day) to honor the souls of saints and the community of the dead.
When visiting the cemetery, you will notice that the most common gesture is lighting candles next to the graves. The ubiquity of these lighted candles across the graveyard results in a beautifully luminous setting, albeit with an unsettling atmosphere. Because of this, along with other factors, candles became one of the many familiar symbols of the Halloween season, making them one of the most easily attainable decors you can use at home!
Picture this: an old doorway lying ominously in front of you. In between are candles of all shapes and sizes, gradually melting away from the heat. Doesn’t that give you chills down your spine?
Conversely, we understand if candles being a fire hazard concerns you, so we suggest a safer but creative alternative: fake candles, no lit flame required! How? Grab a cardboard roll or an old PVC pipe, and color them in white using used print paper or spray paint. Then, use the melted adhesive from a glue gun for the wax drippings of a candle. Voila! A creative way to make candles!
Arachnophobes and entomophobes beware! Spiders and insects are sprawling everywhere! Doesn’t it send shivers down your skin when it feels like something is crawling up your body? Even the sight of spiderwebs can give us goosebumps. They are also one of the most favored and popular ideas for Halloween decorations!
Let’s start with those spiderwebs, of which you can find many creative methods. Perhaps the easiest of them would be the yarn method. The web has a familiar and fascinating geometric pattern that is relatively easy to replicate. The first part is the base, where you will have at least four strings or more intersecting in the middle. Once the strings are firmly tied at the center, start creating the spirals by weaving each piece of yarn around the intersected base.
Now that you have made your spiderweb, it’s time to add the spiders! You could buy plastic toys from novelty stores, but that isn’t quite imaginative. Why not make up your own arachnids instead? Artistic methods vary from origami to even copper wires! That’s up to you to decide.
From the sinister smile of the Jack-o-Lantern to the cloaked whiteness of souls, these are some of the most familiar images of the supernatural and mythological we associate with the spooky season. Hence, they are perhaps the go-to ideas for Halloween decorations, featured in various art forms, from sizable statues to pumpkin carvings.
Of course, these two items are not the most affordable decorations, so here is a more creative yet budget-friendly alternative you can try out: paper cut-outs! In fact, we recommend two types: three-dimensional and paper chains.
For the jack-o’-lanterns, instead of going through the hassle of carving out a fresh pumpkin, why create one (quite literally) from scratch? For this, grab a few sheets of orange construction paper, and cut them into thick rectangular strips. Then, using a puncher, create holes on each end of the strips. Bundle the strips together, and insert pins in the holes. Afterward, separate these pinned stips to form the spherical-shaped body of the Jack-O’-Lantern. Finally, add the facial features using cut-outs from a black sheet of construction paper.
For ghosts and other paranormal entities, try creating a classic paper chain. Firstly, cut a piece of paper into two, lengthwise. With one half of the sheet, fold it in an accordion-like manner until you have a rectangular shape. Make sure you have enough space to draw your intended shape. Then, trace an outline of the ghost, preferably with a pencil, in case you make mistakes. Cut out the outline, and carefully unfold the paper to reveal the chain! Add additional accessories or doodles if you see fit.
Those are three budget-friendly and artistic ways to decorate your home for the scariest time of the year! Still, we have more Halloween ideas we’d like to share with you, so stay tuned to our upcoming blog entries this October!
