Fire Safety Tips for Your Home

March is Fire Prevention Month in the Philippines, so we’ll share a few safety equipment you can arm your family with in case of fire in your home…

As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure.” This is especially true when it comes to fire safety in your home. Fire safety is an important aspect of any home. It is essential to take precautions and measures to ensure your home is safe from fire hazards.  It is a crucial aspect of protecting not just your shelter, but also your loved ones, and belongings.

Here are some tips to keep your home safe from fires:

Install smoke detectors

Make sure you have working smoke detectors on every floor of your home, especially near bedrooms. Test them regularly to make sure they are working correctly and change the batteries twice a year.

Have a fire extinguisher

Keep a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location and make sure everyone in the household knows how to use it. Also, it is essential to have the right type of extinguisher for the type of fire you might encounter.

Create a fire escape plan

Create an escape plan with your family and practice it regularly. Identify all possible exits and have a designated meeting spot outside. Make sure everyone knows the escape routes and where to meet outside.

Be careful with cooking

Never leave cooking food unattended, and keep flammable items away from the stove. Keep a lid nearby to smother any potential flames.

Keep heaters away from flammable objects

Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can catch fire, such as curtains, furniture, or bedding. Keep them away from heat sources like stoves, fireplaces, and heaters.

Don’t overload electrical outlets

Avoid using multiple plugs and extension cords in one outlet. Replace any damaged cords and avoid running cords under carpets or rugs. Also, do use damaged cords. Replace cords that are frayed or damaged.

Always turn off or unplug unused appliances

Turn off appliances when you are not using them, and unplug them if possible. This applies to items like irons, toasters, and space heaters.

Store flammable liquids safely

Keep gasoline, propane, and other flammable liquids in a cool, dry place away from heat sources and out of reach of children.

By following these tips, you can greatly reduce the risk of a fire in your home. Being aware of potential hazards and taking steps to prevent them is crucial for keeping your home, family, and belongings safe and sound.
