How often should you change your linen? | AllHome.com.ph

Jul 19, 2021

When we refer to linen in the house, what comes to mind are bed sheets, blankets, and pillows. We all know we need to change them regularly. But how often? There are other types of linen too! Let’s not forget about the towels in the bathroom, table linen in the dining room, and dish linens in the kitchen. These need regular changing too!

Bed Linen –

Change is good!

Most people say that changing your sheets every other week or every three weeks is okay. But experts say that a weekly linen change is ideal especially if you have pollen allergies, if your or your partner is sick or sweats a lot, and if a pet sleeps on the bed (sleepadvisor.org). You also have to consider doing a weekly wash when you eat snacks and meals in bed, or go to sleep without taking a bath.

Tiny Tenants

When we fail to do a regular linen change, a lot of unwanted guests tend to overstay and grow in number. Apart from tiny food pieces and debris, body oil, and skin cells, dust mites are one of the things you must be worried about. They are allergens that feed on human skin. Dust mites are allergens and cause fever and trigger asthma. There are millions of other bacteria and viruses that can thrive in our bed sheets. Perhaps, it’s time to rethink the laundry schedule!

Pillow fight

According to a study published by the Journal of Clinical Microbiology (http://jcm.asm.org/content/early/2012/10/25/JCM.01992012.full.pdf), the highest concentration of bacteria on the bed is at the head, groin, and leg areas. Pillowcases, like bed sheets, also need weekly washing. Your pillows (the cushions), on the other hand, need to be washed at least twice a year, or replaced once a year. A new set of pillows can also help maintain a good sleeping posture, resulting in maintaining a better sleep hygiene.

Bathroom Linen –

Bathroom towels, strictly speaking, need to be washed every three to four uses. They also need to be dried completely after every use to prevent prolonging moisture and inviting bacteria to happily live between the fibers. Since bath towels are considered as germ magnets, doing laundry twice a week is a task we should all aim for. As for hand towels, they need to be washed and changed more frequently. They aren’t always used to wipe off clean hands, and are used more often than bath towels. You should replace a hand towel in the bathroom every other day.

Kitchen & Table Linen –

Some of us use linen in the dining area. How often you should change it depends on how messy the last meal was. Once your tablecloth is stained, you should change it immediately. Make sure that the same thing applies with fabric placemats, and table napkins. A prolonged neglected stain on these linen items poses the same problem of bad bacterial growth. As for dish towels and tea towels, a good rule of thumb to follow is to wash them every day. Proper washing of home linen includes laundering them in water with the highest temperature that the fabric can stand. High temperature that the fabric can stand. High temperatures can eliminate bacteria better than room-temperature water in your washer. Essentially, we can all create a cleaner, healthier home for our family by not skipping on laundry chores!
