Living in the Philippines, air pollution has become a problem that we have gotten used to. The smoke from vehicles, factories around the metro, and the humidity make it a hotbed for poor air quality. You will notice this after a whole day outside, dirt and grime can be seen sticking to your body while washing your hands or taking a bath. Imagine having to breathe that air for the whole day and even at home. You’ll risk having other particles that can cause other respiratory illnesses too. Now, add Covid-19 and it becomes a bigger problem.
Having said that, our homes should be one of the safest places we have to breathe in better air but that isn’t really the case. You can close all the windows and doors of your home but the air quality would be almost on par with what is outside. That is when an air purifier comes in handy.
There are a lot of these air purifiers sold online and in store but most can be on the expensive side especially on a tight budget. Improve the quality of your home, work place, or just any space through an air purifier. This DIY from AllHome will teach you how to create an air purifier at home. Doing this simple DIY won’t take an hour to make and a whole lot cheaper too.
You might be wondering, what is an air purifier? Simply speaking, an air purifier cleans the air we breathe indoors. It uses a filter to get rid of small particles and even allergens for a better air quality. It’s actually very easy to make and a lot cheaper than the ones you can buy. That said, let’s begin…
First, let’s answer the question, How does it work?
The DIY air purifier works like how your normal fan works. It sucks air through the back trapping the unwanted particles on the filter and clean air comes out the other side
Now, let’s gather your supplies. You’ll need these,
HEPA has been the gold standard in filtration as it blocks almost 99% of particles including other allergens. MERV 13 and FPR 10 are recommended as they filter out 80% of these said particles as well. All these types can filter dust and smoke particles in the air very well. If you are having a problem knowing what type of filter is being sold, there are usually labels on the box on what kind of particle it filters out.
You can actually use any kind of fan for this but we’ll use a box fan because it’s the easiest fan to install a filter to and it stands flatly when the filter is installed. If your box fan has knobs on the back, just put it in the highest option and take the knob off before installing the filter.
The trickiest part here would be finding a filter that is large enough or larger than the fan. Good thing Allhome has an assortment of box fans with different sizes to choose from.
To install the filter, place the filter on the back of the box fan. Notice that there is an arrow on the side of the filter, make sure that the arrow is pointing to the fan. They should have the same direction of air flow. Secure the filter to the fan with a cable tie and tape the edges of the filter and the fan together. Tape it carefully so as not to let air go in between the filter and fan itself.
We put it in the back of the fan so that the particles will get trapped on the filter before reaching the fan blades itself. This also makes it easier to clean.
Now that you are done with your DIY project, it’s time to put it to use. Place it in the most used room like the bedroom or the living room. Close the windows and doors before turning the fan on to prevent outside pollution from reentering the room. As much as possible, place it away from walls or other furniture that might hinder airflow.
Also take note that a smaller air purifier might not be effective in cleaning out the air of a large room. We suggest you make more than one of these air purifiers and place it in parts of the house that you always stay at.
Air pollution will always be present but a little bit of care goes a long way in preventing long term respiratory illnesses. Your home should be a relaxing and safe space that shouldn’t be harmful to you and your children. In fact, this specific DIY air purifier design has been proven to reduce indoor air pollution by up to 80%. That is almost at par with the most expensive air purifier sold elsewhere.
