How to Make Your Home Cooler This Summer

How to Make Your Home Cooler This Summer

You know that summer has arrived when you’re sweating in more than 30°C temperatures. Add to the fact that we live in dire times of climate change and costly utility bills. These days, looking for ways to cool down may take a lot more than quenching your thirst or reaching out for the air conditioner. In today’s blog entry, we will be turning down the heat by giving you some tips and items that will help you feel cold and refreshed for the summer days.

Finding the Right Air Conditioner

Among the more obvious actions to take would be to turn on the air conditioner, but you have to consider its repercussions. Homeowners’ frequent use of the appliance is one reason for expensive electric bills and has also contributed to greenhouse gas emissions.

However, thanks to technological innovations and regulations over time, these cooling appliances have become more energy-efficient, which you can learn through their Energy Efficient Rating (EER) and Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). Both score the efficiency of an air conditioner at an area’s particular temperature. The higher the score, the more efficient it is.

Another factor to consider is the correlation of the aircon’s horsepower to the room’s size. An ACU too big for the room would cause the compressor to turn on and off frequently, while an ACU too small for the room will not make the air cool enough and will continue to run until it does. In either case, it will consume a lot of energy. To know what should be the optimal size of your AC for your room, look into this chart for reference.

Room Size

Aircon Horsepower (HP)

6 to 11 sq. m

0.5 HP

12 to 17 sq. m

0.75 HP

18 to 22 sq. m

1.0 HP
23 to 27 sq. m

1.5 HP

28 to 40 sq. m

2.0 HP

41 to 54 sq. m

2.5 HP

Placing your electric fan

The more cost-effective alternative to an air conditioner would be the electric fan, one of the most common household appliances in the country. But, you can do much more than push a button to the highest level and point it towards you and others.

With a bit of knowledge of aerodynamics, you can cool your home, no aircon required.

Firstly, open the window of the room of your choice, such as your bedroom. Then, open a window in another part of the house, and point your electric fan towards it. This way, the inside of your home creates an area of low pressure, causing warmer air to come out and cooler air to get in.

Another creative hack you can try for yourself is to turn your electric fan into a makeshift air conditioner by placing a bowl of ice in front of the fan and letting the cool air blow towards you.

Getting the Right Refrigerator

When living in a country with a hot and humid climate like the Philippines, you have to replenish yourself with a few glasses of cold water to stay well-hydrated. Hence, you’ll need a good and well-maintained refrigerator to keep your pitchers of fluids nice and cool.

As with air conditioners, fridges consume significant amounts of electric energy to chill or freeze foods and beverages stored inside. Therefore, you should also consider energy efficiency when finding a refrigerator.

Look for the Energy Efficiency Factor (EEF) score, which, similar to EER and SEER, measures how much energy it consumes to operate your fridge. The higher the score, the less energy it efficiently consumes to keep itself chilled.

Trying Out New Recipes

If cold drinking water isn’t enough to keep you satisfied, perhaps it’s time to mix things up by making up new desserts and treats! One of the most simple recipes you can try is juice-flavored ice cubes. Most refrigerators have ice trays or ice makers included in their freezer, so making them is as simple as pouring a liter of Tang Fruit-Flavored Juice into them and waiting for it to freeze.

But, if you want to take it to the next level, what if we tell you that you can make your own homemade ice cream with just three ingredients? Pour two cups of chilled heavy cream into a bowl and whisk in a hand mixer until doubled in size and formed stiff peaks. Then, add mix it with a can of condensed milk and a flavoring or topping of your choice, be it cookies, vanilla, strawberry, or chocolate. Freeze it for a few hours (or overnight), and you will get yourself an ice-cold dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth!
