How to Organize Your Garage

How to Organize Your Garage

There are approximately 1.1 million private cars registered in the Philippines as of 2020. If you’re a car owner or if you’re thinking of becoming one soon, you know that the cheapest brand new car that you can buy will still cost you the six-figure worth of money. Given a car’s price along with the comfort it provides as you bring it with you wherever you go in your daily lives, cars are very much worth every penny we spend on them. With that said, you would not want your precious ride to suffer from UV exposure, bird droppings, and or be put at risk of getting scratched by people walking when you park it just outside your house, which is why, for AllHome, if you have a garage, it’s best that you store it there. Doing so will help keep your ride clean and help prolong its life.

One of the reasons why many people can’t use their garage to store their cars is they’ve been using it to store other stuff. This new year, if you decide to keep your cars in your garage, but don’t know how to start given the other things that are occupying your garage, then this article is for you. In this article, AllHome will be sharing with you a guide on how to organize your garage.

1. Clean Out Your Garage

Firstly, you’ll have to dedicate one to two full days to get this task done. Go through every stuff that’s sitting in your garage, and sort them into four categories: things you want to keep, things to donate, things to sell, and things to throw away. You can prepare boxes for sorting or simply mark off areas in your garage with chalk to know where to place which.

AllHome recommends donating toys you’ve already outgrown from, selling decent clothes or bags you no longer like, and throwing away things that can’t be repaired anymore and expired household chemicals.  If you can’t let go of things because of their sentimental value, AllHome recommends taking pictures of them so you can still keep the item without it adding to your clutter.

For the things you decide to keep, we recommend also labeling the cardboard boxes or stackable storage boxes.  Doing so will not only keep your things organized, but this will also help you easily find what you need next time.

Additionally, when you find that your garage actually has more room even when your car is already parked in it, AllHome would like you to bear in mind the following items that are not advisable to be stored in your garage: paint since the extreme temperature can damage it, propane tanks (if your garage is enclosed) since a spark can ignite it, and papers because this attracts bugs.

2. Use the Overhead Space

AllHome thinks it’s best to keep items off the floor. Doing so will free up more space for your car preventing it also from hitting your things when parking. Invest in shelves or cabinets that are elevated—this will also allow you to clean the floors easily.

If your garage is not very spacious, AllHome recommends installing open shelves. Other than it giving you easier access to your things, it also does not require additional space to swing doors open. On the other hand, cabinets will require that additional space, and it may also encourage you to stay disorganized because you can’t see your things cluttering as they are covered by the doors. An advantage of cabinets with doors, however, is that your belongings are protected from dust and dirt.

Make use of the ceiling of your garage as well. This space is perfect to hang long and flat items that you don’t use daily, like ladders or sports gear such as surfing boards. As a precaution, AllHome wants you to make sure that the things you placed in the ceiling are secured so they won’t accidentally fall on your car.

3. Keep It Clean

Finally, simply cleaning and organizing your garage once is never enough for AllHome. Make sure that the efforts you put in doing the first two steps do not go to waste by maintaining your garage’s cleanliness. Get pesticides to keep insects away. Have a broom and dustpan or a vacuum near your garage so you can tidy it up right away when you make a mess.

AllHome suggests having a hose nearby. Spray your garage with water regularly to remove dirt that is stuck on your flooring. Finally, sort the things in your garage every year at least once to know which items can be disposed of already.

Organizing your things may be bothersome, but will always give good results. Doing so can increase your productivity. You will also save time looking for your things when you need them in the future, giving you more time to work on your tasks instead of searching. An organized and clean garage will provide you with space to store some of your things while also protecting your car from the damage it can receive when parked outside. Follow this guide, and your car will definitely thank you for taking great care of it.
