From your typical at-home wear to your pricey tuxedos, having quite a stack of clothing is a part of living in a family home. Therefore, arranging and storing them in your closets are hassles that may come as an everyday challenge. But, you need not fret when you have the right game plan to organize your apparel. In today’s blog entry, we will discuss the right ways you can arrange your closet into a storage place with no fuss or mess. This article comes in two parts: folding and segregating. Each of them is essential in organizing your clothing closet.
Folding
Learning to fold your clothes is a fundamental step in organizing your laundry closet, as compacting them into manageable sizes helps make space in your storage closet. These days, some households would possess a folding board to do the chore more efficiently. However, even without owning one in your home, folding by hand is still the universal option and ideally should not be so difficult.
T-Shirts
The typical method would be to fold the shirt into thirds, folding the sleeves back and folding it in half.
However, there is a much faster method that you can achieve with practice and patience. Once you lay down the garment, find three points: one on the left sleeve, another halfway below it, and lastly at the bottom left, as illustrated below. Connect the upper and lower points, pinch them together, and turn & flip. With this hack and some practice, you will be able to fold your short-sleeved shirts in less than 2 seconds.
Long sleeves and pants
Long clothing items such as long-sleeved polos and pants may also need some folding. Granted that you can use an old-fashioned hanger for convenience’s sake, their absence will require you to learn how to fold them.
As with the short sleeves, fold one side to the center with the sleeve straightened out. Then, fold the sleeve back and down, aligning with the folded side. Do the same with the next side and fold the rest of the shirt in half.
Pants are the easiest. Fold one side of the pants over the other, and, from bottom to top, fold it into thirds or fourths, whichever your preference.
Socks and handkerchiefs
Lastly, we have other items such as handkerchiefs and socks. While you can easily fold the former into squares, folding socks are different due to their shape. The easiest way to pack them is probably through a ball method. Place one sock on top of another and roll them from the toe to the top. Afterward, pull the outer cuff over and around the rolled socks. By packing them into small balls, storing them in the drawers would be more convenient.
Segregating
Now that you have folded all the clothing, it’s time to consider how you arrange your clothes in your closet. There are a few factors to consider, including the size of your wardrobe, the number of clothes, the hangers you will be using, etc.
But, before you can start arranging, everything has to start from a clean slate. Clear out your closet of any clothing and other items first. Envisioning your organization from scratch would be much easier and induce more creativity.
Once you have emptied your closet, begin your first segregation job. Often, you have stored some shirts and bottoms that you have either not worn for quite a while or outgrown. Whichever the case, it is perhaps about time to give them away to someone else. If you are unsure, grab two boxes or any sizable containers and label them as “Keep” or “Donate.”
Another thing that might hinder you from giving your clothes away is sentimentality. Sometimes, it is hard to let go of things you hold dear, such as your favorite childhood shirt. Ask yourself this question, courtesy of famed home organizer Marie Kondo: Does this spark joy? Such an interrogative statement became a thesis statement of the renowned KonMari method. It emphasizes keeping things that you value more than merely organizing your stuff.
After segregating, putting them back inside is another challenge in itself, as it may depend on the construction of your closets. Here is one example. Try imagining your cabinet divided into two parts; the left side is where you may place the clothes that you usually wear at home, whereas the right side is the place for outdoor clothing. From them, divide each side into thirds or fourths, depending on the clothes you will be storing: shirts, bottoms, etc. Smaller items such as handkerchiefs and socks can be stored in drawers whenever a cabinet or closet possesses one.
Regardless of what arrangement you decide, note that a good organization is easy to navigate and quick to understand.
And voila! Now, you have properly organized your clothing and closet. And, remember: how you arrange and manage is a direct reflection of how you care for your home and state of mind.
