How to Take Care of Your Garden This Summer

How to Take Care of Your Garden This Summer

When the cold breeze brought about by the ber months turns warm, we all know what’s coming up: SUMMER SEASON—one of the most awaited seasons by everyone because it is during this time period when students are free of their academic responsibilities for a relatively long amount of time in comparison to Christmas breaks, semestral breaks, and other holidays, thus making it the perfect time to go on vacations with family or even friends.

Sun screen, swimwear, and sunglasses, all summer essentials have a check! You’re ready to go, but wait, what about your home? Will everything be okay when you leave without anyone taking care of it? Your garden probably won’t be. Our green friends, even though there are those that are low maintenance, will need their daily sprinkle of water to stay alive. You wouldn’t want to come home to dying plants after spending so much time and effort making sure that all of them are well, right?

This is exactly why AllHome is here. In this article, we’ll be sharing with you different ways on how to keep your garden healthy even when you’re away for summer.

Tidy Up Your Garden

First things first, if you’re going to leave your garden, make sure that it’s well tidied. Before leaving, declutter your garden by pulling out weeds, and cutting off yellow or dead leaves. Doing so will remove the competition of your plants to water giving them a better chance of survival when you’re on vacay.

Watch out for Pests

After tidying up your garden, check it for pests that might munch on your leaves. For rodents, you may use mouse traps. For insects, you can use an insecticide.

Keep Your Plants Watered While You’re Away

The most important way to keep your garden healthy is by ensuring that they are watered. Now, how can you water your plants when you’re not at home? A simple way to do so if you’ll only be gone for a few days  is by giving your plants a good amount of watering that can keep them hydrated for days.

Another option is installing a drip irrigation system. This works by slowly dripping water into the roots of your plants. If you don’t want to spend money on it, you can make your own irrigation system by getting old soda can or bottles and poking holes into them with a pin. Fill the can or bottle with water and bury them near your plants before leaving. With that, the water will slowly drip into the soil just like an irrigation system.

Imitate a Greenhouse

When we talk about greenhouses, we immediately think of big structures that regulate the climate conditions to which plants grow, however, did you know that you can do the same thing in your own garden? All you need is a plastic bag. First, water your plants. Second, wrap the plastic bag around your potted plants and use a rubber band on the base of the pot to secure it. Finally, leave them in an area that receives indirect sunlight. Doing these will give you a mini greenhouse. Your plants will regain the water that evaporates from them by having these evaporated water drip back on them.

Seek Help from a Friend

The final tip we have for you is to find a trustworthy friend. What better way to take care of your garden can be than finding someone else who can do so when you’re away? Ask your neighbor, friend, or family member who shares the same passion for gardening as you. To make things easier for them, organize your materials in one area like using a storage box to keep all gardening materials your friend might need. Then, to show gratitude, get them a thank you gift from your trip.

We dedicate a lot of time tending to our garden to make sure that our green friends grow into beautiful plants, which is why it can be worrisome for other people to leave their garden unattended for too long. With the tips in this article, you don’t have to worry about your garden as you relax and enjoy your vacation. Following these tricks will allow you to come home to still healthy green friends.
