Stress-free Ways to Declutter Your Home

Mar 05, 2020

Decluttering your home can be such a daunting task. Especially if you’re the type of person that puts sentimental value to every single thing and it makes it so hard for you to let go and dispose. Or if you’re like me – who’s a professional procrastinator – that puts this difficult mission on hold for days, months, and even years until you realize that you now live in a junk-accumulating-abode.

Don’t be intimidated by the thought of repositioning your stuff or throwing them away. Give your home a breather! And when everything’s cleared out, you will now have more space for more stuff and keepsakes once again! Just kidding! It’s time to break that habit and organize your way to a clutter-free home! Here are a few tips you can try:

1. Determine and Arrange – Go around your home and determine the prime areas that need decluttering. Arrange these areas from easiest to hardest to clean. Start with the easiest area so you can quickly cross them off your list and leave you feeling motivated to do more. Tip: You can also subdivide a space and go from corner to corner – this way, you won’t get too overwhelmed with all the work that you need to go through.

2. Prep Your Way – You don’t really need fancy tools to start decluttering your home. But you will need to prepare five bins, boxes, baskets, or any large container labelled according to their specific purpose:

  • Return – These are items that will go back in their designated spots.
  • Recycle/Upcycle – This bin is for items that need to be recycled, such as paper, plastic or glass. Or for items to be upcycled such as bottles that can be turned into drinking glasses or a flower vase.
  • Fix – Use this container for items that need further repairing, such as a pair of shoes that you love but needs cleaning.
  • Trash – This container will simply be for items that are purely trash – things that can be disposed immediately such as expired goods and items that can no longer be mended.
  • Donate – These are for items that you believe can still be used by other people or for those who will be needing them the most.

3. Assign a Proper Place – Spare change, eyeglasses, keys, and books are just some of the things that we keep lying around the house. Have a console or side table where you can place your glasses, spare change, and keys. Or a shelf for your books. If we just put everything back in its proper place after using them, an accomplishment has already been made.

4. Create a Schedule – In order to avoid a cluttered home, set a time table or schedule purging days that will allow you to reevaluate all your belongings and see if it’s time for them to be disposed, donated, put back in their proper place, or if they are worth keeping. You can do this once a month, during the weekends or every six months – whatever works for you.
