Carving pumpkins has always been a staple when Americans celebrate Halloween every 31st of October. Here in the Philippines, we have other customs that we follow. But that doesn’t mean we couldn’t adapt this fun and happy tradition for our kids to enjoy.
Pumpkin carving can be a little intimidating at first as we’re not really accustomed to do this. We don’t usually cook pumpkins here, so why would we own any fancy tools or equipment that could help in carving it, right? But fret not, there are actually tools you can use in pumpkin-carving which you probably already have.
All you really need are just a few kitchen essentials like bread knives, ice cream scoops, and cookie cutters. They can cut the top of the pumpkin, scoop out seeds, and easily carve out any shape you can imagine.
Ready to carve your pumpkin? Here are the six unlikely, but immensely useful, pumpkin carving tools you probably already have in your arsenal.

If you’re looking for the best tool for cutting the facial features on your Halloween pumpkin lantern, such as its eyes, mouth, and nose, you probably have it sitting in your kitchen. Yup, there’s really no need for you to grab a special carving knife as you can just use what you regularly use in the kitchen. Use your serrated knife as it can cut through thick pumpkin rind with ease, then use a paring knife for the details to carve out the small cuts you need to take out.

In most plastic pumpkin-carving kits, there’s always a scooper meant for scraping the insides of the pumpkin. Same with fancy carving tools, you don’t need that. A word of warning, though: It is much easier to accidentally poke yourself with an X-ACTO knife than with a paring knife, so you’ll want to be extra careful. That said, a sharp paring knife could also be used if you don’t want to get this type of knife.
While those inexpensive pumpkin carving kits you see online may seem appealing as they promise everything you need, they are actually not your best bet. You can just use whatever you have in your kitchen or buy simple tools you can use in your future home renovation projects. But no matter which tools you’re using to make your jack-o’-lantern, you have to make sure to clear off a large workspace and keep all of the instruments you’re using in one place, so you know where they are at all times and also for your safety. Remember, the only thing you should be cutting is the pumpkins and not yourself!
